Facebook Business InfographicNew York, New York (April 29, 2015)- According to a recent survey by HJMT Public Relations Inc., a New York public relations and social media agency, small businesses benefit from having a presence on Facebook.

“We were interested in understanding how Facebook pages are perceived by users,” said Hilary Topper, president and chief executive officer of HJMT Public Relations. “We asked respondents questions relating to their perceptions towards business pages and the results were incredibly insightful.”

Of the 150 individuals surveyed, an overwhelming amount said they like a Facebook Business page to “help support local businesses.”  A whopping 63.4% like local shops and restaurants, 44% like national or local media outlets, 34% like corporate or brand-related pages and 27% liked celebrities. Only 27% mentioned that they like non-profit organizations that address causes they support.

“The results of our study showed that Facebook business pages are a really important tool for small business owners,” added Ms. Topper. “It seems like Facebook users want to be in the know to help support their communities.” The survey showed that 44% of respondents want to be aware of sales and promotions from these businesses.

For marketers looking to generate likes from conducting contests or giveaways, they may have to think of another plan. “Only 16% said they liked a page due to the fact that they were involved in a giveaway or contest. This shows us that another tactic needs to be used in order to generate likes and attention to the page,” said Ms. Topper.

As far as drawing in clients to brick-and-mortar shops, the survey was split-50% said it doesn’t encourage them, where as 49.3% said it does. In regards to online shopping, 59% of respondents said it would persuade them to shop.

“The stats don’t lie. We hope that providing small business owners and marketers with this information will give them the upper hand and help generate more attention for their local business,” said Ms. Topper. “Facebook Business pages are clearly the best choice to draw users in and motivate them to use their products and services.”
